Third Sunday in Lent - Understanding

Today we explore the intent of Understanding as we move on from last week's intent of Control of Speech through the Lenten season. The kind of Understanding we mean is that of ourselves and others, so it is very much the corollary to control of speech.

 

There is a short closed-eye process in the middle so probably not wise to listen while driving...

 

So what is understanding?  How does one develop the quality of understanding?

How is this related to the field of awareness discussed last week?

What is the relevance of agape, of love?

How do we approach agape?

 

The Third Chapter of the First Epistle General of St Peter we translate directly from Greek because most if not all existing translations fail to bring out the deeper senses of Peter's instruction.  Unfortunately, all standard English translations are constrained by previous translations (and accidental mistranslations) and this creates a considerable pressure to maintain significant errors in both connotation and even denotation as I demonstrated with "monogenes" a couple of weeks ago. Since I am no one important this is not a problem for me. 

 

Now, even though I would normally cover the day's Gospel too I have neglected to in this case: concentrating so much philological effort on 1 Peter.  The Gospel reading is the "Woman taken in adultery" from John 8 for those interested -- so -- that's one for next year, I guess.
